When writing a song, what comes first: the melody or the lyrics? I don' think it has to be either. When I write I compose both simultaneously. I also don't see a need to 'rough draft' my songs. I find it more beneficial to write and rewrite one line at a time till I have finished copy. Ultimately, the best method to employ is the one that works for you.
