Filmmaker Sidney Lumet Dies At 86

Another Hollywood legend has passed away.
American filmmaker Sidney Lumet died Saturday morning in his Manhattan home at the age of 86.
Known for directing film classics such as 12 Angry Men, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, The Verdict, and Network, his stepdaughter Leslie Gimbel, says Lumet died from lymphoma.
He once said:

sesame-street-comes-to-pakistan.jpg

Sesame Street continues to be a universal learning tool for children as it will now be broadcast in Pakistan to help boost education.

The U.S. is donating $20 million to fund a local version of the show, which will have the traditional New York City setting swapped for a Pakistani village.

Don't expect to see Big Bird or Cookie Monster though, as the show will feature new characters including Rani, a six-year-old female puppet with pigtails and a blue-and-white school uniform and will speak in Urdu.

Writer for the Pakistani version, Imraan Peerzada says:

"She will represent what little girls have to go through in this gender-biased society.

We are not avoiding religion‚ but we don't want to label children…the basic learning tools of literacy‚ numeracy‚ hygiene‚ and healthy eating have to be in place first."

Good work, Sesame Street. What a fantastic idea.

Victoria Beckham Loses Her Cool While Parenting Her Kiddies

Victoria Beckham is ALWAYS the perfect picture of restraint and control but over the weekend at an LA Galaxy soccer match at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA, her poshness lost her cool for a split second when her children — Brooklyn Joseph, Romeo James, Cruz David and BFF Ken Paves — forced her [...]

After our fun-filled day by the beach, Darion, his mom, David and I made our way to the AMC Theater at Century City to see Source Code. Now, I’ve had mixed feelings about the film from the very first time I saw the trailer a few months ago. On the one hand, the trailer didn’t make the film look all that good … on other hand, well, Jake Gyllenhaal is in it so …. you can see how I was torn. When I learned that Duncan Jones (David Bowie‘s son) directed it, I was sold. Overall, I liked Source Code very much … tho, for me, the ending left much to be desired.

I’ve heard some people say that Source Code reminds them of Inception and while I can see how some people can make that connection, I totally do not think the movies are all that similar. The storylines are totally different and there really isn’t all that much overlap thematically. In Source Code, we are are taken on a journey that tries to make us understand the concept of alternate realities and for the most part, I was on board with what the movie was trying to say … but the ending, I’m sorry, no I just didn’t buy it. I’ve watched my fair share of sci-fi programming that has given me a “working knowledge” of time travel, alternate realities, other dimensions etc. (and by “working knowledge” I mean, I’ve come to believe in a set of fictional rules that seem feasible to me if time travel, alternate realities, etc. actually existed). The ending of Source Code just did not work for me in the framework of my “working knowledge” of sci-fi temporal travel so … yeah, no, I didn’t like the ending. The rest of the movie, tho, I thought was inventive and entertaining. As much as I love Jakey poo, I felt he overacted a bit in some scenes but not enough to turn me off entirely. The support cast was fine but they were like background wallpaper … none of them really added anything to the story that stood out for me. I wish Source Code wasn’t a PG-13 film because the action felt a bit watered down. But, again, the inventiveness of the story, the twists and turns and overall plotline really entertained me. I don’t expect this film will do gangbusters at the box office but it’s worth seeing. If you miss it in theaters, you’ll be just fine seeing it on DVD or on cable.

Did any of y’all see Source Code this weekend? What did you think?

Reflections Upon the University Level Art Class

As we progress on in our succession of art we boldly venture upon the 17th century Baroque style. This artistic endeavor was initially inspired by the mandates set forth by the Roman Catholic Church as they laid down specific rules which applied to art work. Their demands to the artist were that any work produced should be understandable to not merely the informed members of the society but to the illiterate as well. This moved art from a pure philosophical viewpoint to one of action.

Depiction of Gender in Renaissance Art

First off the Ancient Egyptian civilization has fascinated me since I was a young child. I can proudly claim to have more books on this era of history than our local library, books authored by such specialists as Massy, Shaw or Redford. I will first identify and provide some information on the image in question. The bust in question is that of Queen Tiye of Egypt often referred to as the Cat Goddess. Queen Tiye was the mother of Akhenaten and Amenhotep IV. She was eventually to become the grandmother of one of ancient Egypt's most popular and most known pharaohs, King Tut.

Eco Friendly Guitars How to Make Your Music Green

Something Else By The Kinks (often referred to as just "Something Else") is frequently cited as one of The Kinks' very best offerings. It is laid back Britpop at its finest, with the songwriting of Ray Davies hitting a mature and refined feel. It's no surprise that it ranks in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time (#288). Here's my take on why.

Steel Drum Music At Your Wedding Ceremony

Dating back to 4,000 years ago, the guitar remains one of the oldest and most widely recognized musical instruments still played today. Wood is the main material used in guitar construction, and in most cases, exotic woods on the brink of extinction are used. But with increasing concerns about deforestation, the time has come to find more sustainable materials for constructing this all important musical instrument.

Find Websites To Buy Beats From

Man, with a name like Greezy Joe and the Cheap and Easy Band, how could three guys go wrong? While the lyrics to Greezy Joe's trop rock debut album, Sail On, certainly aren't Jimmy Buffet class when it comes to cleverness, verbal dexterity, and turn of a phrase, there are moments on this album that make you go, "Gosh darn, it's good to be alive today." One of the favorites around here is the song "Tap Dancing Down Jackass Alley," which is a good as anything the aforementioned Captain Buffett has ever done.

Phonebook facebook

We're not sure how we feel about this, but Facebook is going ahead with their quest to "make the world more open and connected" by giving out users personal contact information such as home addresses and phone numbers to third-party developers and websites.

Facebook first announced this plan in January, but suspended any further action after public outcry from users and Congressmen, but whether you like it or not, the social network may be making you more social than you want to be.

Although the info is only intended to be shared with application developers, experts still fear it may be easier for scammers to take advantage of users who could give out their personal contact information after a few wrong clicks.

Others like Mary Hodder, chairman of the Personal Data Ecosystem Consortium, sees this as Facebook's willingness to change the rules of the game. She points out:

"People never thought when they were posting this data [such as their phone numbers] that it would be accessible to anyone but friends. There's a real mismatch of expectations around that. Even if Facebook comes back with new protections, they're still saying, 'Hey, get over it, your data is public.' I feel badly for users that Facebook's approach is 'You give us anything and it's all fair game.'"

We don't think hope there is a reason to get TOO worried because the information sharing is not automatic and a developer has to request permission to access any information from a user. A spokesperson for the website said:

"You need to explicitly choose to share your data before any app or website can access it and no private information is shared without your permission."

The best way to avoid this information being shared however, might be to completely remove it from your profile.

Is the Electronic Drum Now More Popular Than the Acoustic Drum?

For singing to become a very effective tool in entertainment, the singer should have the ability to evoke or convey emotions and meaning to the song. This can be done through a heartfelt performance and good diction. So if aspiring singers want to learn how to sing well, proper diction should be addressed and studied as well.

Make Rap And Hip Hop Beats Faster With Free Beat Maker Software

Some forms of music benefit from a bit of judiciously applied moderation. Classical music's ebbs and flows build emotion, tension, and release. Many folk songs are brilliantly understated and thus work in a way they wouldn't if they were performed at full tilt. However, rockabilly music isn't one of those forms of music!

Welp … today was a total wash for David and me here in Berlin. Because we both stayed up until after 5:00 AM local time to watch the Academy Awards last night (and root for our boy Trent Reznor), we kinda slept until 2:30 PM … and then both had to work a full day of writing so … it’s now 8 PM, we’re still working and the day is basically over.

BUT, because we are here for 2 weeks, we counted on having a day or two which could be wasted and so … today was one of those days. Tomorrow night we are seeing Kylie Minogue LIVE on her Les Folies 2011 Tour so that should get us back into the swing of things. We plan on getting back on our normal sleep schedule tonight so that we can wake up and venture out into the city tomorrow morning as planned. We are planning to enjoy a late dinner tonight so … mebbe we can still salvage at least a bit of today :)

Baltimore Police officers arrested

Damn, Balitmore!

Seventeen Baltimore Police Department officers and two brothers who own a car repair shop have been charged with conspiring to commit extortion.

The two brothers paid police officers to arrange for their company to tow vehicles from accident scenes and make repairs, as opposed to a city-authorized company.

U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commented on the case by saying:

"The criminal complaint alleges that the officers were secretly working for a private auto repair business when they were supposed to be working for the police department and the citizens of Baltimore. Police officers cross a bright line when they take payments from private citizens in connection with their official duties."

Heck yes they do! C'mon cops! Use your heads.

Sounds like the Baltimore PD is pissed too, as Commissioner Fred Bealefeld said:

"I will not tolerate any criminal activity that undermines the integrity of the Baltimore Police Department and the many sacrifices our officers make each and every day and I thank our federal partners for their assistance in this investigation."

So how much did these cops-turned-criminals make?

Shop owners Hernan Alexis Moreno Mejia and Edwin Javier Mejia paid officers $300 for each vehicle they steered to the company, with some crooked cops making more than $14,400!

The defendents are facing MAJOR jail time too with a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for the extortion conspiracy.

It's a shame to hear about the law, which police officers lose their lives trying uphold, being broken by other brothers in blue.
